7 beaches in Fuerteventura you cannot miss

From turquoise lagoons to wild and endless beaches: a selection of spots that capture the best of the island, with a special focus on the south.

Fuerteventura has an incredible number of beaches, but not all of them feel the same. Some impress with their scale, others with the calm of the water, others with their wild character or the landscape that surrounds them.

In this selection we have brought together 7 beaches that are genuinely worth visiting if you want a fairly complete picture of what the island has to offer. We have given more prominence to the south of Fuerteventura, because that is where some of the most spectacular and open coastal landscapes are found, though we have also included two stops in the north that fully deserve their place.

1

Playa de Sotavento

Sotavento is one of the most iconic beaches in Fuerteventura, and for good reason. The official tourism website describes it as a succession of beaches with a natural lagoon formed by a sandbar, famous for its open landscape, clear waters and its connection with windsurfing and kitesurfing. It also stretches for around 9 kilometres, giving it a sense of space that is very uncommon. It is a beach for walking, stopping, watching the colour of the water and feeling that almost infinite scale that makes this part of the island so special.

2

Playa de Cofete

Cofete represents the wildest and most dramatic version of Fuerteventura. According to the official website, it is one of the most unspoilt and least developed beaches in the Canary Islands, stretching for around 12 kilometres and accessible by track, which helps maintain that sense of total isolation. It is not your typical comfortable beach for a carefree day out. It is more of a place you visit for the landscape, the force of the ocean and the feeling of being in a remote, almost untouched corner.

3

Costa Calma

Costa Calma is one of the best options in the south for those looking for a beautiful, easy-going beach. The official website presents it as a beach of around 2 kilometres with clear sand and turquoise waters, very suitable for those who want to swim, walk a little or simply relax. It has less drama than Cofete and less of the vast postcard feel of Sotavento, but that is precisely why it works so well for so many travellers.

4

Esquinzo-Butihondo

Esquinzo-Butihondo is one of those long southern beaches that often does not get as much attention as others, but deserves a place in any good selection. The official website defines it as a semi-urban beach with golden sand and turquoise waters, almost 3 kilometres long. The best thing about this area is that mix of space, light and a certain ease. It is a very rewarding beach for those who want room to breathe without giving up relatively easy access.

5

La Pared

La Pared, and especially Playa de Viejo Rey, shows a completely different side of Fuerteventura. The official website highlights it as one of the island's surf references, with rougher scenery, a strong Atlantic presence and a much more intense character than other beaches in the south. You do not come here looking for total calm so much as to feel the ocean, the wind and one of the most powerful sunsets on the island.

6

La Concha (El Cotillo)

To balance the selection with something from the north, La Concha had to be included. The official website describes it as a beach protected by a natural reef, with white sand and calm waters, great for families and for those who want a more gentle beach experience. It is one of those beaches where it is very easy to stay longer than planned.

7

Grandes Playas de Corralejo

Corralejo makes the list because it combines two hard-to-beat things: turquoise sea and dune landscapes. The official website highlights that it is a stretch of around 9 kilometres of beaches alongside the largest dune field in the Canary Islands, within the Corralejo natural park. More than a single beach, it is a great coastal landscape that perfectly captures the most visual and recognisable side of northern Fuerteventura.

Our selection, with a stronger focus on the south

If your plan is to prioritise the south of the island, this guide can serve as a very good starting point. Sotavento, Cofete, Costa Calma, Esquinzo and La Pared show five different ways to experience the southern coast: from calm lagoons and endless stretches of sand to wild landscapes and areas shaped more strongly by wind and ocean. And as a complement, La Concha and Corralejo help complete the picture of the island with two northern beaches that are also very much worth visiting.

There is no single best beach in Fuerteventura, because each one has its own character. But if you want to start with a solid, varied and truly memorable selection, these seven are a very good place to begin.
