What to Do in the South of Fuerteventura
The south brings together some of the island's most powerful landscapes. Here we explain how to understand it and make the most of it.
The south of Fuerteventura brings together some of the island's most powerful images: long beaches, open landscape, coastal paths, the JandĂa massif, viewpoints, clear skies and a sense of space that is hard to find elsewhere. Here you do not need to fill the day with plans to enjoy it.
Why the south has so much to offer
The southern part of the island concentrates some of Fuerteventura's most recognisable landscapes. The island's great trail crosses La Pared, reaches the beaches of Sotavento, follows the southeast coast and arrives at the Matorral area before continuing towards Punta de JandĂa. That continuity between coast, sand, salt marsh and mountain makes the south work very well for both quiet days and more active plans.

Plans that really make sense here
The south is especially well suited to beach days with scenery, gentle coastal walks, hiking routes in JandĂa, trips to Cofete, cycling or e-bike sections between Sotavento, Costa Calma, Esquinzo and Morro Jable, and stargazing experiences. The area combines nature, open coastline, protected spaces and excellent night skies.

A calmer south: Sotavento and Costa Calma
Sotavento, Costa Calma and the surrounding beaches work very well for an open, flexible and unhurried day. The value here is not so much in doing lots of things, but in enjoying the space, walking a little, stopping where it is worth it and letting the landscape do its part. That fits very well with a slow, self-guided approach to the island.

A wilder south: JandĂa and Cofete
When you want a more intense experience, the natural next step is JandĂa and Cofete. There the landscape changes: the terrain becomes more prominent, the sense of isolation is greater and the south shows a rougher, more spectacular side. It is also where some of the island's most emblematic routes are found.

Frequently asked questions
Which part of the south of Fuerteventura is best for a first visit?
For a first visit, Sotavento and Costa Calma are a good starting point: wide, easy and very representative of what the south has to offer. If you want a greater visual impact, add a trip to Cofete.
What is there to do in the south of Fuerteventura beyond the beach?
Hiking routes in JandĂa, the ascent to Pico de la Zarza, night viewpoints and cycling sections between Sotavento and Morro Jable are some of the best options.
Can you combine Sotavento, Morro Jable and Cofete in one trip?
Yes, perfectly. Sotavento and Morro Jable are fairly close and fit well within the same section of a trip. Cofete requires a bit more time and planning, but is worth it as a separate outing.
